Archives For Next Xbox

Adam Orth, who started a fervor with a series of tweets about an ‘always on’ console has departed from Microsoft. According to Game Informer, Orth resigned, but it is unclear if “whether this was a voluntary or forced resignation.” After the Twitter debacle, Microsoft commented “we apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers.”

It’s probably a safe assumption to infer that he was forced to resign, considering Microsoft had to come out and clean up his mess the next day. It’s probably not good business to tell customers to go fuck themselves and “deal with it.” What do you guys think? Did his comments rub you the wrong way? Let us know!

We are slowly, but surely getting a picture of what Microsoft’s next console is going to be like. It was revealed in Bloomberg today that Microsoft’s next console is going to be using an AMD chipset, and it combines powerful “Jaguar” central processing units with graphics chips, said one of the people, who sought anonymity because the plans aren’t public. The shift to the so-called x86 format ubiquitous in modern personal computers means Microsoft will drop the Power PC technology designed by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), and game discs made for the current Xbox 360 won’t be compatible. The source also confirmed the May 21 reveal date, which is unsurprising, because the Xbox 360 was also revealed in May 2005 right before E3. This news is interesting because it is now making the new Xbox similar to Playstation 4,which is good news for gamers because ports of games will not be as drastically different as they were this generation. This will free up resources for more game development and possibly less instances of game delays, it has been discussed by many developers that the Playstation 3’s difficult to handle architecture caused many delays for their titles. We can all look forward to May 21 to learn more, and Nerdsynq will be covering the event to keep it here!!

Well, that was quick. Adam Orth, a creative director at Microsoft Studios, has taken to Twitter and seemingly confirmed the existence of an always on Xbox. He isn’t at the very top of the food chain at Microsoft,  but definitely high enough to know what’s going on. Anyway, read his tweets in the pics below and decide for yourself. This may be an example of the hubris that some developers have been privy to in the last few months.

A new report is claiming that Microsoft’s next console will require an internet connection to start up. A source spoke to Kotaku and revealed that if the system goes offline for more than three minutes, any game or app that is running will be suspended.

“Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used,” the source said.

In case you weren’t aware, it was revealed some time last year the codename for the next-gen Xbox is Durango. “If there isn’t a connection, no games or apps can be started,” the source added. “If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time–currently three minutes, if I remember correctly–the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”

This report currently corroborates a story from February, when a source claimed that Xbox Live would be an “Integral” component, thus making an “always on” internet a requirement. A report from April 2012 claimed the “always on” component was for combating piracy.  Further speculation claims it is an attempt to block used games. I think it is important to keep in mind that Sony has basically said that the Playstation 4 needs to be always online for it’s features to work, but in a more pleasing and less blunt fashion.

So what do you think? If this turns out to be true, would you not buy a next-gen Xbox. Let us know below!!
