TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

Many of you may be wondering why I have TimeSplitters this high on my list. That is because you haven’t played TimeSplitters. The sheer lunacy of this game makes it great. In an age when many companies and developers decided to push realism and innovation, Free Radical decided that games are ment to be played and enjoyed. While the story in Future Perfect is well structured and entertaining, the real selling point of this game is the multiplayer, but we will get to that later.

Future Perfect sets you in the role of Sergent. Cortez, fresh from the Timesplitters base with a batch of time crystals. unfortunately, the party has been put on hold, as the Timesplitters are waging a full-scale assault on the human’s last stronghold. Upon returning to base, Cortez must set out, using the time crystals he retrieved, and stop the inadvertent creation of the Timesplitters by a mad doctor hell-bent on unlocking the key to immortality. Sounds easy, right? It would be, but the only thing you know is that the doctor will be on a small island in the Atlantic Ocean in 1924. unfortunately, said island is about to be bombarded to kingdom come by the Royal Navy. From then on, it’s up to you to find out where the mad doctor is going and stop him.

Really, with just the campaign, this game is a must play, but what makes it a true classic is the multiplayer. the TimeSplitters series has always been known for its many character choices and Future Perfect is no different. Not only are there multiple choices, most characters have a variety of outfits, allowing you to have your own favorite. Coupled with classic modes like Team Deathmatch and Capture the Bag, the standout mode was Monkey Assistant. In Monkey Assistant, the last place player is aided by a few gun-toting monkeys, thereby giving a dynamic handicap to whoever needed it most. Free Radical was not satisfied with simply creating multiple wonderous levels for you to kill your friends is, the decided to give you a map maker, similar to Halo’s Forge. Needless to say, You had more than enough options to keep you and your buddies busy for a long time

I love this game. I think I prefer Timesplitters 2 for multiplayer and this one’s campaign, but both are excellent. The multiplayer is really where the series shines though. The hours I enjoyed playing this game’s multiplayer with friends with my PS2 multitap is innumerable!

I only played TimeSplitters 2 a little bit, and I was much younger, but what I do remember, I did enjoy the multiplayer
